Hospitality Charity Springboard and Springboard UK have been scouring the nation to find the Chefs of the future. Young, aspiring talent is mentored by experienced professionals to encourage careers within catering and hospitality. The 2019 regional winner of Springboard’s FutureChef at Peterborough Regional College was 15 year old Hilary Bexfield. Hilary’s mentor was Luton Hoo’s Fine Dining Head Chef Ruth Hanson – who was a FutureChef winner herself in 2010!
FutureChef directly relates to the national curriculum and gives young people a life skill. It aims to tackle the severe skills shortage facing hospitality by inspiring 12-16 year olds to develop their cooking skills and understanding of nutrition.
Springboard’s FutureChef features a four stage national competition, annually involving over 8,000 participants. It also includes classroom resources, chef demonstrations and skills challenges, and forms a link between schools and hospitality employers.
Hilary Bexfield from St Francis’ College beat 2 other competitors to reach the National Final of Springboard’s FutureChef competition. Hilary served a delicious menu of Brookfield Farm Lamb Rump, Mint Gnocchi, Crushed Peas, Roasted Onion, Broad Beans, Goat’s Curd & Black Garlic and Lemon Meringue with Ginger & Poached Rhubarb earning her place at the National Final on 18th March 2019.
